Music of the Dead Space series
Primarily composed by Jason Graves, with contributions from several other composers.
The primary composer behind the *Dead Space* franchise—spanning the main survival horror games and most of their spin-offs—was Jason Graves. He scored every core entry and the majority of side titles. Other musicians contributed as well: Rod Abernethy provided additional music for the first game; James Hannigan co-wrote the score for *Dead Space 3*; and the 2023 remake of the original game blended parts of the old music with an entirely new score by Trevor Gureckis. The animated films *Dead Space: Downfall* and *Dead Space: Aftermath* had scores by Seth Podowitz and Christopher Tin, respectively.
For the original *Dead Space*, Graves aimed for an unconventional sound, taking cues from Christopher Young’s work and the score for *The Shining*. In *Dead Space 2*, he expanded the orchestral elements and introduced a string quartet to represent protagonist Isaac Clarke. With *Dead Space 3*, Graves kept his style but added action-oriented themes, while Hannigan composed music meant to push the story forward and stand apart from Graves’s tracks. Each mainline game, including the remake, has had a digital soundtrack album released. The music has been well-received overall, earning Graves several award nominations for his work on the first two games.

Lore & Background
Jason Graves, who had a background in classical music and composition for film and television before debuting in video games, joined the original Dead Space project early in production when the game was a quarter of the way through development. The developers wanted music that was dark and aleatoric in style, ranging from eerie sounds to loud cacophonous sections. Graves took inspiration from the work of Christopher Young and the score of The Shining. The score uses a live orchestra, with each section recorded separately and arranged into four musical layers adjusted in-game based on the situation. The final in-game score for Dead Space is three hours long.
For Dead Space 2, Graves expanded the orchestral elements and incorporated a string quartet to represent protagonist Isaac Clarke. The main theme 'Lacrimosa' was born from creating a concerto using a string quartet. Isaac's leitmotif uses the note order D-flat, E, A-flat, and D-natural, spelling the word 'DEAD'. For Dead Space 3, Graves maintained his style while incorporating action themes, while James Hannigan composed music to advance its narrative and be distinct from Graves's tracks. The 2023 remake combined some elements of the original music with a whole new score by Trevor Gureckis.
